Cracked Foundation

You may have heard that there was a large crack recently discovered in the I-40 bridge connecting Tennessee to Arkansas. Although the crack was found before catastrophe struck, it had serious consequences. The bridge has been shut down, vehicle traffic has been diverted, and even water traffic on the Mississippi River has been backed up. So many headaches and so much trouble has been caused because of a single crack in the bridge’s foundation.

Without a firm foundation, no structure will be able to stand for long. A bridge may fall, a house may collapse, and a person may crumble. In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus encourages his hearers to be wise and heed his words. Those who heed Christ’s words are like a wise man building a house upon a firm foundation. His house will be able to weather many storms, but those who ignore his words are like a foolish man who builds upon a weak foundation. When the storms come, the foolish man will find his home in ruins.

Christians have a firm foundation. In Ephesians 2:19-22, we see that Christians are a part of the household of God. A household that was built upon a foundation laid by the apostles and prophets that is held together and directed by Christ the cornerstone. This is a foundation that has weathered many storms. It is a foundation that has existed for thousands of years and will remain firm until the end. It is a place of security and comfort. It is a place with the Lord.

For Christians, there is no other foundation to build your life upon than the Lord.
