Why Me?
Why me? How could this be happening? What did I ever do to deserve this? Why me?
These are questions that have been uttered countless times by countless people. More likely than not, these questions will be accompanied by life's hardships and unexpected sorrows. They are often asked from a place of deep sadness and despair or they are asked in anger as life has seemingly taken a turn for the worse. It does not have to be this way.
Perhaps we should not wait for the unpleasant twists and turns in life to ask this question. What if we did not ask this question only when the challenges of life present themselves? What if we ask this question when times are good and everything seems to be going right? What kind of changes might we expect to see?
Humility.
An attitude of gratitude.
Reverence for the God who loves us.
As Christians, how can help but to ask the question, "Why me?" Who am I that God, the supreme creator, the beginning and the end, and the Great I AM should care for me? More than that, not only did he care for me, He loved me enough to sacrifice His Son to redeem me (Ephesians 2:4-6). By sending His Son, He did for us what we could not do for ourselves -- He freed us from bondage of sin (Romans 6:16-18). When we learn the significance of God's sacrifice, surely we must feel a measure of gratitude. We were shown mercy and grace that we could never have warranted. Understanding the depth of His love and the greatness of His sacrifice, how can we not develop a love and reverence for the God who has done so much for us?
In the face of that kind of sacrifical love, how can we not be humbled to say, "Why me? How could God have done this? What did I ever do to deserve being called a child of God? Why me?"
